The 1st Edition reprints are on their way and I am quite excited about it.
WotC just also announced new reprints of the 3.5 version of D&D.

This one has me scratching my head. I can still buy 3.5 books new at my FLGS. My 3.5 books are actually in really good shape (picked up the leather bound ones a while back).
I think I would rather see the Rules Cyclopedia reprinted than 3.5.

I just clicked through the survey at the end of the announcement selecting "none of these" and typed "A boxed set or Hardcover of the Basic Set by Tom Moldvay and the Expert set by David Cook Please." in teh comments box rather than typing "Why weren't any Pathfinder books on the list" as I had originally intended :P
I think they are necessary. I have a lot of customers looking for 3.5 stuff, because they played it in 2001 & 2002 and are wanting to teach their kids or just get back into it. They look at Pathfinder, but would rather have "D&D". The best scenario would be to support these lines with adventures, obviously.
I did add my vote for the Rules Cyclopedia, as well.
That would rock.
Bear in mind too that these are "limited collector's editions". So some people will buy them for the sake of completeness; I doubt many people would buy them in order to actually play.
I think it's much more about generating good will than trying to build the actual 3.x player base.
I would have to say they are needed. I've been looking for the 3.5 core books on the cheap on ebay and have had no luck snagging any copies.
A quick look at completed auctions for the 3.5 PHB shows it selling for about $24-$30 not including shipping and I;m assuming the reprints will go for what, $34.99?
It seems to me that there are still a lot of 3.5 books in circulation, if my Half Price Books store is any indication. If you can get the original at discount, why buy the reprint.
I too want the Rules Cyclopedia, which is more difficult to find.
In my area finding any 3.5 books is almost impossible, and even used book shops have a very limited (and pricey) selection. Ebay has proven a poor solution for me as I'd rather not pay an exhorbitant price for a good, clean copy (and sure I can find copies for around $30 on ebay but they look like they went through a wood chipper, usually...!)
Anyway, I'm one of those people who ditched a lot of my books back around 2007 or so and regret it, so I suspect I'm in the circle of the target demographic for this reprint.
I still have my books and am also baffled by the idea to re-release 3.5 However, it should be noted that they will include all the errata, so in that way they will be an improvement over the original books.
