There is no Hell in the Blogosphere

but there is an afterlife...

First off. Dammit. I hate the word Blogoshpere!

Secondly.  No blog is meant to last forever.  We come, we go, we leave a little bit of ourselves behind.

I am here to make a humble request of my fellow RPG bloggers out there.

When you decide to leave, first please know that you will be missed.
Secondly, for the love of all that is sane, please either leave you blog in place and turned off or at least do something about your URL.

I was very excited to see that Bree Yark! was back today. http://breeyark.blogspot.com/
Until I actually began to read the posts.  Nope.  Looks like one of the blogs that people use to either age links of make money.  It might be a real person there with real thoughts, but damn it reads like computer generated text.

To quote Frank Zappa:
When you pay the bill, kindly leave a little tip
And help the next poor sucker on this one way trip.

When you leave your blog, leave a little behind for the rest of us.
Like Chgowiz did.

I suspect that when and if I stop working on my blogs (Keith Davies -- In My Campaign and Echelon d20) I'll either hand them over to someone else to curate or continue, or just collect the content and make it available for download. Even if I stop working on it, I'm generally pretty proud of my work.

I'm seeing a lot of this right now - blog squatters move into abandoned URLs, crowing "All your blogs are belonging to us".

But yeah, it is a bummer, thinking an old friend has returned only to find it's some weirdo instead.

Can people really take over unused blogs? I didn't know that.
I stopped adding to my blog Grizzled Old Traveler two years ago when I got a job doing travel blogging for Gadling. I still left it up and I still get hits and the occasional comment.

I didn't know that old blogs could be taken over either - slightly worrying if such technology can be turned on blogs that are still active!

I've always thought that should I finally throw in the towel (after all the hissy fits along the way) I'd just leave it ticking over (site rental only costs about $10 a year) so as long as I'm breathing there should always be a HeroPress.

Of course I am tempting fate there...
