I was out shopping today with my kids today at the toy store. I was looking down the alisle of games and it got me thinking about Christmas and games.
I was thinking it would be a great idea to give a game this year for Christmas. It can be anything, really the new Pathfinder box set, the D&D4 box set from last year, or even your favorite OSR product.
The idea here is to buy a game for someone, a kid or a group and introduce them to the hobby.
So what are some of choices for gifts?
The Pathfinder box set is nice, but the 4E one beats it in one key respect, the 4E starter set is only 20 bucks; a great intro price.
What would you like to give?
Who would like to give it too?

I can't really speak for the D&D 4 starter, but I think you certainly get your money's worth out of the Pathfinder Beginner Box.
Personally, I'd rather get (or give) the richer one, if I were just starting.
Tim: Just me two cents, I think you get a LOT more for your money with the PF B. Box. My nephews saw it first time tonight, and even with character generation we got through three levels of dungeon (they were too stubborn to roll with the pregens).
I got the D&D started for myself last year as well as a friend's son and was very disappointed.
In the past year my BIL asked me about learning to play D&D and I set him up with everything free retro-clone wise I had but I'm seriously tempted to get him the Pathfinder boxed set. To me, the Pathfinder set is just plain better. It gives actual character generation rules and that alone is win compared to the D&D starter.
I'm also considering getting him LotFP but, as much as I'm a fan, this is the case where the Grindhouse edition's over the top art is a disadvantage. That's too bad, because the tutorial book is great. I also don't think it's GM's advice is good for a newbie.
Then again, a copy of Mentzer on eBay might be the ticket.
Tim the other issue is that the Red Box starter for 4E was full of errors when it came out.
I believe you get more bang for your buck with the PF set and online they have added content to help support the game. The content included the addition of the Barbarian...which is kind of cool.
IT is $15.00 more but I think that you get a whole lot more playability out of the PF box as compared to the 4E one.
What OSR products out there would people like to give?
Hmm...I would have to say that Labyrinth Lord with the AEC and a copy of Stonehell Dungeon wouldn't be a bad little gift...
Lamentations of the flame princess would be a nice gift.
Yeah...not for kids. I was wondering how long it was going suggest this.
I hope the Delving Deeper box will fit the need for an OS intro for kids. How about the Dungeon Alphabet? I think kids would enjoy looking at the pictures and probably learning some new words.
