I have not talked about my Gen Con games yet, so let's get on that.
We got down to Indy a day early so we could have some extra time on Wednesday, but it also gives Tuesday to Saturday to play at night.
The Order of the Platinum Dragon continued their trek through the underdark. A few random encounters including a run-in with Evelyn (and it was so satisfying to put her mini down on the table!) the party entered the Shrine of the Kuo-toa.
Of course, I had to make my own Blibdoolpoolp statue. Though I will freely admit I spent more time on making her than she saw in the game.
To clean out the shrine of the fish people took a couple of nights.
The Order worked their way through the Underdark where they defeated Belgos and Silussia who nearly took out the entire party. They finally entered the Vault of the Drow and the City of Erelhei-Cinlu.
Saturday, our last night we started really early and got right down to it. After spending some time in the city and avoiding a cult of hobgoblin assassins the Order managed to get to the Fane of Lolth where they were able to stop a ritual.
The trouble is the ritual, while keeping out the sun, was also keeping Lolth away. Oopps!
They defeated Lolth, at least on this plane,
The Order was all sucked into the Abyss and now they are all seperated from each other.
My kids wanted to do something different for their next level, 14 to 15. So I split them up.
I am going to run a series of one-shots all set in the Abyss. I am not sure what they will all be yet, but I know one now. The group's paladin and fighter are going to spend some quality time with Liberation of the Demon Slayer! It's now a realm trapped in (or near) the Abyss and should be a lot of fun.
I had always known I wanted to use this, I just needed an excuse. Well, Venger himself gave me an excuse when he put it up for free. Oh an read my original review of it here.
This is going to be great.
Facebook reminded me that it was today, 4 years ago that we created characters for this campaign. No records were broken for advancement, but it has been a great 4 years.

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 8: How can we get more people playing?
Today is Day 8 and the questions is How can we get more people playing?
Big question really.
I just got back from Gen Con. I saw a lot of families bringing in the next generation of gamers. But that is largely the current generation bring their kids. So unless you are having kids, you are not helping this particular issue.
I saw an absolute ton of new gamers that appear to be attracted to RPGs from "Critical Role". I can't tell how many times I heard "is this the game they use on Critical Role?" and then watching the same people drop $250+ on a game. They are young, they have some disposable cash and are willing to learn.
The biggest way through is this.
We need to stop being a bunch of Gate-keeping dicks.
Seriously. Everything from pointless edition wars to telling people they are playing "wrong" to telling fans of the game they are not really apart of the game.
Look. I get it, there is a badge of honor to be able to say "I played when the Satanic Panic was at it's height" or whatever. I even do it. But looking down on people that started after you or *gasp* don't give a fuck what you do should not be derided. Don't like Dragonborn? Fine, don't play one. But don't tell me or others they are somehow "doing D&D wrong" because they do.
I have seen a lot of people come into this hobby. And I have seen a lot leave because the gamers around them couldn't stop being dicks for ten minutes. I saw it this last Gen Con in fact.

Dark Places & Demogorgons: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed; How Soon is Now?
The Buffy crossover I did with Supernatural was so much fun I thought I would try something similar only this time for my favorite genre show of all time, Charmed.
Of course, this is not the first time I have done a Charmed / Buffy crossover. Back in the days of my Willow & Tara games, I had an episode/adventure "Semi-Charmed Life".
This one though is different. This one needs to live in the world of "Sunny Valey, OH". Thankfully, while transporting the cast of Buffy to 80s requires some tweaks, I can transport the entire cast of Charmed to the mid 80s (let's say 1986) with barely a change.
Ok, what do we need to know about Charmed in 1986 for a Dark Places & Demogorgons game?
Well. For starters, the girls are all young. Their mother, Patty, has been dead now for 8 years and they are being raised by their grandmother, Penny. Penny, or Penelope Halliwell has blocked their powers to keep a warlock from feeding on them. When Patty died she kept the power block in place to keep the girls safe. Penny was no witch to mess with either. While originally a peace-loving hippie witch, she soon learned that the only way to deal with demons and warlocks was to kill them.
Leo, the girls' Whitelihter and Piper's future husband, would also be watching the girls at this point.
We have a rule in writing Willow-centric adventures. Try to avoid having her spells go awry. It is lazy writing and unbecoming of someone that is supposed to be one of the most powerful witches in the world. BUT. This Willow isn't that yet is she? She is young. She is eager to learn. So let's say that one day she finds a spell to summon a witch teacher (this is a spell I actually use in my D&D games). She takes the spell to Tara, who advises caution but can see nothing wrong with it. There isn't until Willow casts the spell and asks not for a witch tutor, but the most powerful witches in the world. She is a little shocked when she gets three girls just a few years younger than herself.
For an adventure, I would have the Charmed girls either be NPCs to the regular cast OR as PCs if there are new people.
I see Pru as being angry at first that she was transported here, then angry at grams for hiding their powers. Pru comes up with the idea of blocking grams and Leo. Pru also enjoys going on patrol with Buffy (a nod to their real-life friendship).
Piper would be the most out of sorts and the angriest. I can see her having the most interactions with Willow; the both have issues with witchcraft to work out.
Phoebe would find this to be a great adventure and, this is 100% Phoebe, she is the one that learns Tara is in love with Willow.
Grams will scry for the girls, not get them, yell for Leo then yell at him. She will eventually find them, 100% safe and sound. I would not be too surprised if she didn't have a word or two with Willow.
Now my first Buffy/Charmed crossover has such a great title. What should I call one from the mid-80s?

Today is Day 7 and How can a GM make the stakes important?
For me the GM can make the stakes important by getting player and character buy-in early on. While the normal carrot for adventurers is the gold, that might not be enough for some groups.
In my "Come Endless Darkness" games there is over-riding issue that the sun is out and the sun gods are all dead. The characters are invested because their world is in danger. The players want to keep playing in this world so they are working hard, even doing things they would not do if gold was the only motivator.
Of couse, if the stakes are important, then the rewards need to be equally important. One of my players is even asking what it takes to become a god now!
External motivation is good, but internal motivation will help get worlds built.

It's Monday and my first "live" posting of #RPGaDAY2018 since it started. So let's do it!
This week starts the "HOW" questions with How can Players make a world seem real?
There is actually a lot that players can do to be honest, but I find a couple of things really help the most. Invest one on who your character is and what he/she was "before" this adventuring life and what they plan to do afterward. Make their character into a whole person.
Also, players can interact with the world at a level the DM can't. They interact with all the NPCs, monsters and these interactions can help make the world seem more real. The DM can build the world and fill it with all sorts, but the players provide the needed glue to make it feel like a whole.

She will reveal who she is if the players find the Deep Gnome encampment in D2, maybe even this weekend!

So many over the years. There was the annoying assassin Kirkroy that plagued my characters for years. I have used a vampire, Mal Havoc, to do the same to others.
I think my most memorable one had been the evil necromancer Magnus. He was the big bad of my 1st ed games, constantly appearing to either taunt or try to kill the PCs. He also, at times would help them, if it also helped himself.
I have been dying to bring him back someway.

For me at least, it how many times can I go back to it and tell new stories.
Dungeons & Dragons has staying power. WitchCraft has tons of staying power.
I mean seriously, how many times can I go to the Keep on the Borderlands? Well, at last count at least 8-9 times.
After nearly 40 years of doing this I can get a lot of mileage out of most games.

While my introduction to RPGs was a book of monsters, my first love is Magic.
I always look at the magic system first. I love new and different magic systems and I love to try them out. Whether the system is fantasy, modern or horror, it's what I look for.

#RPGaDAY2018 Day 1: What do you love about RPGs?
To get my posting muscles working aging I thought I would participate in Dave Chapman's annual #PRGaDAY for 2018.
Today's topic is What do you love about RPGs?
For me, I think it is the endless possibilities of worlds unexplored. Of stories yet untold. And it's also about sitting around the table with friends having a good time.
I have great RPG-related memories. Some of those are the actions of real people, others are the actions on in our minds. And even more deal with the actions in and around the table that had nothing to do with RPGs directly.

Five Albums, Five Days: The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
I honestly can't of another album that has had the impact of this album in my life. Like Dark Side this album had always been in the background noise of my life. Both of my older brothers were huge Beatles fans, my brother Mike, in fact, got a job at the local Capitol Records plant as a teen just so he could get the albums the day they came out.
It was Mike that told me about the Beatles. We spent hours talking about music. I learned more from him about music than from anyone else on the planet; except maybe for my older brother Pat. They are the kinds of musicians that can pick up any instrument and play. I was envious of Pat (he bought me a saxophone that I was terrible at), Pat was always envious of Mike.
Mike sat me down one day. He gave a pair of headphones that cost more than the computer I had just bought and he said I was going to listen to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I told him I had heard this album before. He said, maybe, but I had never listened to it.
Mike died a few years ago. After I heard, I went looking for my copy of Sgt. Pepper's. I couldn't find it. I am sure I had loaned it out. I was always doing that.
I got a new copy. But I still miss my brother.

Five Albums, Five Days: Thomas Dolby - The Golden Age of Wireless (1982, 1983, 1984, 2009)
Very, very few albums actually reinvent themselves to me and stay with me over the years. The Lion and the Cobra does, Dark Side of the Moon doesn't. But this album(s) does.
Is it a synth-pop ode to the dawning of the computer age in the 80s? Is it a proto-techno album? Is it a Steampunk/Diselpunk album? Or is it a screed against the very technology it seems to embrace.
Each new time gives it a different feel.

If your's had SBMWS then how long is it? Does "Radio Silence" feature a lot of synthesizer or guitars? It took me a while but I tracked down most of these copies and they are now part of my collection.
When I was young I was in love. In love with everything. But now there is only you.

Five Albums, Five Days: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
Continuing now to Day 3. This album had always been there in the background noise of my life for as long as I can remember. I am not sure who it was who first told me to listen to it in its entirety with headphones; likely my brother Mike or my friend and DM at the time, Jon Cook. I am going to give Jon the nod since I know how much he loves this album and what it means to him.
Simply put this might be the greatest album of all time.

Survive This! Dark Places and Demogorgons - Carmilla / Buffy Crossover
My Dark Places and Demogorgons Buffy game has been a lot of fun. I keep reaching back into my own high school years for ideas and one that came up was the "Foreign Exchange Student", once I hit on that everything else flowed.
So a bit of background. The year is 1983 and the place is Sunny Valley, OH. Here the events of lives of Buffy, Willow, Tara, Dawn, and the others are playing out. We just had Sam and Dean Winchester come to town so we now know there is a lot more going on.
The problem is that I have a GREAT idea and it involves Laura at 13 in full-blown "kid investigative reporter" mode AND it would also fit nicely with the timeline in the movie Styria.
BUT it also means that I am planning on NOT using Carmilla herself.
Having Carm in the mix, even if she is a "useless vampire", is just asking Buffy to try to stake her. Not preferred. But I figure this can be like Pre-Flash Barry Allen visiting Oliver Queen in Arrow.
So for a week or so, Laura Hollis, Teen Reporter is in Sunny Valey, OH and she does not like it. No sir, not one bit.
Of course, this is a perfect time for all those old jokes about "having a girlfriend in Canada". Alex should be the butt of that joke.
What Class is Laura?
That's a good question. He dad teaches her Krav Maga. He makes his own pepper spray that can drop a bear. He could be a Doomsday Prepper, but he is not paranoid, just overprotective. Laura could be a Karate Kid, but that doesn't really define her either. In truth, there is an archetype of the horror genre that is not covered; the Kid Gumshoe or Kid Reporter.

THEY are hiding the truth. What truths? Well if the adults won't get up off their butts watching "Dynasty" or "Wide Wide World of Sports" then it's up to you. You are ready for it too. You have your notes, your tape recorder (and hope to save up for a real camcorder one day) and you have the one thing that the others don't; moxy, gumption, the desire to dig and keep digging.
While most of your fellow students have pictures of Duran Duran and Bon Jovi on their walls you have Woodward, Berstein, Cronkite, and Murrow. Of course, those are there to hide your giant map/pin board of every weird thing going on in town. That jewelry store that never has customers save for late at night. Your money is on werewolves. And really what is the deal with a Light House in middle of a landlocked county where then the nearest body of water is the YMCA Pool.

Five Albums, Five Days: Stevie Nicks - The Wild Heart (1983)
The search for my muse continues.
The year is 1983 and it is my 13th birthday. There was was always a lot big "to do" about your "Golden Birthday" when you were a kid. That is when your age matches the day you were born. I was born on a Friday the 13th in June and now I was 13.
Not sure what I got that day from others. But I do know one. My best friend Steven Todd gave me a copy of an album by an artist we both loved. But in truth, I think he did it so I would stop borrowing his tape. The artist was the immortal Stevie Nicks.
Last year for my birthday my wife got me the extend cut rerelease. It was like listening to it for the first time again.

DC in the News
So I remain, despite a box-office trouncing, a devoted DC fan.
Few things are cooking in the DC Universe that will make me happy this fall. Lets start with a big one and move on to EVEN BIGGER ONES!
We already knew that Kate Kane, AKA Batwoman will be featured in the Fall sweeps 4-Episode Arrowverse crossover (I guess that also means no tying in Black Lightning just yet).
Now it seems they want to use that as a backdoor pilot for a Batwoman series for 2019-20.
They are currently looking for an out lesbian/queer actress of any ethnicity to play Batwoman.
There is nothing about Batwoman's background that says she has to be white, or black, or Asian, or Algonquin, or Hispanic. There are three things though that immutable about the character.
1. Kate is a Soldier. She lives to serve. Just now she wears the uniform of the Bat.
2. Kate is a Lesbian. Even in her earliest interactions, this is something she knows about herself and we know about her.
3. Kate is Jewish. This informs how she sees life, how she approaches everything she does. The colors of her uniform.
In Comics Dark seems to be the new Black.
The Witching Hour will be a 5-comic arc featuring Wonder Woman, JL Dark and the plot revolves around Hecate and Witches!
I mean read this:

Holy Shit! Robin just said "Fuck Batman" and that Raven! That is the Raven I have been waiting nearly 38 years to see on my screens. Even Dove and Gar look great.
So yeah. You can have your Infinity Wars and your snappy Thanos (who is a rip-off of Darkseid anyway). I know where my action is going to be this fall.

Survive This! Dark Places and Demogorgons - Supernatural / Buffy Crossover
Came home last night to a nice treat. My hardcover version of Dark Places and Demogorgons came in. This one I ordered from Bloat Game's own website. After all the fun I had, I wanted to have this hardcover version too.
I even got it signed!
It got me thinking what would be a great one-shot Crossover for my Sunny Valley, OH game. Then it dawned on me! The only thing that makes sense is Supernatural!
In the in-show continuities, they were all born between 1978 and 1984 so why not extend that to my Sunny Valley game.
Supernatural even has baked in reasons for Dean and Sam to show up. John Winchester has heard the rumors of Sunny Valley and has come to town to help clean it up. He decides to enroll the boys in the local High School for a bit and this is where they meet the cast.
If Tumblr is to be any source on this the meeting goes a little like this: Buffy and Dean meet, Dean hits on her, she rebuffs...(ouch), monsters come, Dean tries to save her, she instead kicks the monsters asses and saves Dean. Dean falls more in love with her than before.
Sam and Dawn, as the youngest are stuck together. They each discover the other's secrets; That Sam has some demon powers in him and Dawn is a powerful psychic.

Inactivity Update
Things have been kinda quiet over here at the Other Side.
Sorry about that.
My day job has hit a busy period and I have been given a promotion. This time the promotion came with the increased pay AND responsibility...not just the increased responsibility. So I have been working an extra ten hours each week.
Gaming-wise I am really busy.
I am still running my three independent-but-connected D&D 5 games. My oldest is also running three different D&D 5 games covering 15-16 different players. In fact this week the only day that a game hasn't played in my house was yesterday.
I am also in serious prep-phase of my Gen Con game of D2 Shrine of the Kuo-Toa and D3 Vault of the Drow. It is going to huge and I want to make it as Epic as I can.
Hope to have some more soon.

OMG: Celtic Mythos, Part 1

The Celtic Mythos from the Deities & Demigods is an interesting combination Irish and Welsh gods. Truthfully, this is no big deal. There was a lot cross-pollination between Irish, Scots, Welsh and Manx cultures. Even the first page of this section features an Irish god, The Dagda, and a Welsh one, Arawn.
While I could go on (and on) about the Celtic gods, the point of this series is talk about demonized gods.
We do know that when the Christian monks settled in Ireland and Wales they did a fantastic job of saving these old oral traditions. Not only did they take them down, but they were immortalized in such remarkable in their own right texts such as The Book of Kells. Maybe because of the literacy of these monks and their obvious love for their country and these stories we do not see the demonization of these gods the same way as we do in other cultures.
Instead of becoming demons these gods often became faeries or other creatures of fey.
Not to say there are not monsters! I am beginning to think that Ireland is the home to more types of Undead than anyplace I have ever seen. I might follow up with that. But let's talk about the gods and heroes in the book now.
Irish Ways and Irish Laws
The section on the Celtic Gods is smaller than some of the other gods here. This is not a big surprise. There have been some fairly major changes to how scholars see the Gaelic world since 1988 and on to today.
In Irish myth, we learn that Ireland was invaded many times. Some of these invaders are viewed as gods, or at least some of their offspring are. We can read this in the Lebor Gabála Érenn, or "the book of the taking of Ireland". There are four major groups (there are others, but these groups also connect to the Mythological Cycle of Ireland), the Fomorians, the Fir-Bolg, the Tuatha Dé Danann and the Milesians.
Of these, the Formor and Fir-Bolg are at least quasi-divine. The Tuatha Dé Danann are seen as gods, but mortal gods and the Milesians are human.
Most gods, namely the ones associated the most with the Tuatha Dé Danann, diminished in power with the coming of the Milesians. They become the sÃdhe or the fairy folk living under the mounds.
We have to assume that the Milesians are there since Cú Chulainn is listed as a hero and that puts us in the Ulster Cycle of Myths (the one after the Mythological Cycle).
Of course, some gods are still gods. The Morrigan, for example, is a goddess and features prominently in the Ulster cycle.
Other gods went in the opposite direction. The goddess Brigit (Brigid, Bri, Bride, among others) was not later demonized. Quite the opposite. She would later become Saint Brigid.
What About the Fomorians?
If there was a case for a demon in Irish myth it belongs to the Fomorians. Giant, supernatural, ugly and representing the destructive side of nature, their king is even named Balor.
To me though the Fomor were always closer in nature to the Greek Titans. Yes they are evil, but Brigit is the daughter of a Fomorian king. There are many blood ties between the Fomor and the Tuatha as well. This makes their relationship more like Tolkien's Orcs and Elves.
Next time, no demons? No problem! The celts have enough troubles with the undead!

Willow & Tara: Survive This! Dark Places & Demogorgons
Yesterday I took the entire Buffyverse and dropped them into 1984 Ohio and found it works rather well. Today I want to continue that thought but also do a deep dive into the three witch classes that DP&D has to offer. And I know of no better way to do this.
So for reasons that work for the game, I am going with Dark Places & Demogorgons: Player Options & GM Guide for the witch classes. A White Witch for Willow and a Nature Witch for Tara. So far I have no reason to assume that Willow will need a Black Witch. The two realities are connected, but also different.
Willow D. Rosenberg
In 1984's Sunny Valley Willow is a mathematical genius who is the only person, quite likely in the whole town, that knows how to use a computer for more than just video games. She has been best friends with Alex Harris since kindergarten and has been friends with Daniel "Oz" Osbourne since Junior High. Oz is obviously rather fond of Willow, but he suspects there is something holding her back.
During her summer job at the local library, Willow discovered a locked room. Normally one to follow every rule, this room called to her. One day she found a key (after several weeks of searching she would later admit) and opened the door. Inside books on the occult, summoning demons and more importantly magic. She has been reading them and trying to master them. Though she has help from a fellow witch and honest to the goddess wiccan in Tara.

Faith protected Tara because she felt something of a connection to her. When Elizabeth Summers died north of town Faith became the new Slayer. Elizabeth came back (thanks to Alex) and soon Tara and Faith joined the Northsiders on their nightly fight against vampires, zombies and other undead menaces. While Faith has been drawn more and more to Elizabeth and their shared mystery. Tara has been getting much closer to Willow.

If this were an 80s show then Willow and Tara would have had (implied) sex but then Tara would have been killed and Willow sent on an "evil lesbian" rampage only end the show crying in the arms of some man. Really, who wants to see some shitty after-school special cliché like that?
I think these classes work great, to be honest. I would like to reorganize their powers a bit to fit my concepts of these characters. Normally I would let Willow have access to some Dark spells and Tara should be the one to heal by touch.
This also brings up an interesting dilemma. Should Willow be a multiclassed Kid Scientist 1/Witch 4? DP&D, like a lot of OSR games, has no Multiclassing rules. To me though I like the idea of a multiclassed Willow. She starts off as a Kid scientist and then moves to White Witch and maybe Black Witch IF we follow the original series. Tara can start as a Nature Witch then move to White after a bit.
These are great. This really captures what I wanted from this game quite well.

Plays Wells With Others: Dark Places & Demogorgons and Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Reading over Dark Places & Demogorgons I could not help but make comparisons to another game of strange things going on with high school kids fighting monsters. Of course, I am talking about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG.
Both games deal with fighting the unknown, both games deal high school students and both games are steeped in 80s clichés and pop-culture. Where Buffy attempted to subvert those clichés, Dark Places & Demogorgons embraces them.
I am just throwing this out here, I have a lot of issues with Joss Whedon. I think he is an asshole.
But I am damn proud of the work I did on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG.
Reading through the core of DP&D and all the supplements it became very, very obvious what game I need to run.

In this new setting Elizabeth Anne "Buffy" Summers moved from sunny California to the ironically named Sunny Valley, Ohio. As a nod to my friend and co-author on many of the Buffy books, Thom Marrion, who was going to do a series of Buffy books set in Cleveland, I wanted to do this in Ohio. Cleveland is the "big city", but I never detail how far it is.
There is a Hellmouth, but is more indistinct. No one is sure where it is, but they all know it's there. There are two high schools, Sunny Valley Prep (the "good" school, where we start) and Sunny Valley Community High (the "bad" school).

Faith shows up in Series 2 from SVCHS where she makes an impression by killing two vamps right away. She introduces us to her friend Tara, and she and Willow start to spend a lot of time together.
Both Buffy and Faith are built using the Monster Hunter class from DP&D: Player Options & GM Guide. In truth I could build a "Slayer" class, but I didn't really want to do that. I wanted to try them out Rules As Written.
In general the cast would be much younger than the TV show. Anywhere from 2 to 3 years younger. This fits perfectly with DP&D but changes the dynamic a little. For starters, I would downplay the sexual tension to almost nothing, or at least a slow burn. A 200+-year-old vampire prey on a 17-year-old sounds bad. Preying on a 14-15-year-old sounds worse for some reason. I am also going to give Faith the benefit of the doubt here. During my Buffy game Season of the Witch, I pointed out that what the show writers had done to her essentially was so contradictory that the character was broken beyond repair. So what if I took a potential "Bad Girl" and instead gave her a friend. Maybe someone she saved from some bullies. Enter Tara. In this world Faith saved Tara from being picked on because of her poor family and the open secret that she is gay; something that was still very hard to deal with in the 80s. Both girls help each other out till they meet the cast.

In my games, Dawn developed psychic powers. Maybe not Jean Grey levels, but certainly Carrie ones. I thought it would be fun if the "Annoying Kid Sister" trope was subverted by making her Powered. She was built with the optional Psionic classes in the Core Rule book.
I also did Cordelia Chase (basically an archetype "Princess"), Alexander "Alex" Harris (a "Geek" due to his Star Trek obsession), Oz (Metalhead turned Werewolf) and Angel (Teen Heartthrob turned Vampire).
What can DP&D Players get from Buffy?
The Buffy RPG is a great game that focuses a lot on the high school experience and how fighting monsters can be a metaphor for life in High School. Personally, I think EVERY player and GM of DP&D needs to read Chapter 7: Episodes, Seasons and Drama. It is hands down the best chapter written about running anytime of modern supernatural game or a game set around High School age kids. The mechanics on Drama Points and their use would also be useful.
And of course all the monsters, vampires and demons the book has would be helpful to any DP&D GM.
What can Buffy Players get from DP&D?
The Buffy RPG is a mature game. Not just in content, but shelf-life. I know people that are still playing the game 15+ years later. For me, DP&D has given me a breath of fresh air and has re-energized my Buffy-related experiences. Hell, this is the first honest to goodness Buffy campaign idea since Season of the Witch and that was more than 12 years ago.
The "Back to Basics" feel of DP&D cannot be ignored or understated. It really helped me think of this game in a different way.

Faith shows up in Series 2 from SVCHS where she makes an impression by killing two vamps right away. She introduces us to her friend Tara, and she and Willow start to spend a lot of time together.
Both Buffy and Faith are built using the Monster Hunter class from DP&D: Player Options & GM Guide. In truth I could build a "Slayer" class, but I didn't really want to do that. I wanted to try them out Rules As Written.
In general the cast would be much younger than the TV show. Anywhere from 2 to 3 years younger. This fits perfectly with DP&D but changes the dynamic a little. For starters, I would downplay the sexual tension to almost nothing, or at least a slow burn. A 200+-year-old vampire prey on a 17-year-old sounds bad. Preying on a 14-15-year-old sounds worse for some reason. I am also going to give Faith the benefit of the doubt here. During my Buffy game Season of the Witch, I pointed out that what the show writers had done to her essentially was so contradictory that the character was broken beyond repair. So what if I took a potential "Bad Girl" and instead gave her a friend. Maybe someone she saved from some bullies. Enter Tara. In this world Faith saved Tara from being picked on because of her poor family and the open secret that she is gay; something that was still very hard to deal with in the 80s. Both girls help each other out till they meet the cast.

In my games, Dawn developed psychic powers. Maybe not Jean Grey levels, but certainly Carrie ones. I thought it would be fun if the "Annoying Kid Sister" trope was subverted by making her Powered. She was built with the optional Psionic classes in the Core Rule book.
I also did Cordelia Chase (basically an archetype "Princess"), Alexander "Alex" Harris (a "Geek" due to his Star Trek obsession), Oz (Metalhead turned Werewolf) and Angel (Teen Heartthrob turned Vampire).
What can DP&D Players get from Buffy?
The Buffy RPG is a great game that focuses a lot on the high school experience and how fighting monsters can be a metaphor for life in High School. Personally, I think EVERY player and GM of DP&D needs to read Chapter 7: Episodes, Seasons and Drama. It is hands down the best chapter written about running anytime of modern supernatural game or a game set around High School age kids. The mechanics on Drama Points and their use would also be useful.
And of course all the monsters, vampires and demons the book has would be helpful to any DP&D GM.
What can Buffy Players get from DP&D?
The Buffy RPG is a mature game. Not just in content, but shelf-life. I know people that are still playing the game 15+ years later. For me, DP&D has given me a breath of fresh air and has re-energized my Buffy-related experiences. Hell, this is the first honest to goodness Buffy campaign idea since Season of the Witch and that was more than 12 years ago.
The "Back to Basics" feel of DP&D cannot be ignored or understated. It really helped me think of this game in a different way.
