New Release: Dungeons & Dragons 5.5 Dungeon Master's Guide

Went to my FLGS today to pick up the new D&D 5.5 edition of the Dungeon Master's Guide.

D&D 5.5 edition of the Dungeon Master's Guide

It's a big book at 384 pages. Love that my girl Skylla made the cover!

Certainly aimed at new DMs there is still a lot of neat things in this tome.

D&D 5.5 Dungeon Master's Guide Lore Glossary

There are some cool tracking sheets that look like they would work with any version of the game. I hope they release those as PDFs. Granted many of these can be done on just plain notebook paper.

I can also see a world where both this and the 2014 DMG are used together. The 2024 has new and updated information, but I wonder what is not here from the previous one.

The art is great, lots of the magic items get illustrations. Even the spirit board from Ravenloft makes an appearance. Plus there are nice cameos of many familiar NPCs.

The coolest addition in my mind is the 30 pages dedicated to Greyhawk; both the Free City of and the world of Oerth. Including a fold out map attached in back of Oerth on one side and the Free City of Greyhawk on the other.

The Lore Glossary at the end is a lot of fun. The D&D kids, Bobby, Diana, Hank, Presto, Sheila, and Eric are here as The Heroes of the Realm. There are entries here from all over the D&D multiverse of the last 50 years.

Honestly I am more excited about this book than I was about the new Player's Handbook

I'll have to spend more time with this one. But that will wait till next year I think.

New Dungeon Master's Guide Cover

The new cover for the new 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide is now out and features some fan favorites.

Dungeon Master's Guide Cover

So we got Venger, Warduke, and favorite of the Other Side, Skylla!

When I started posting about Skylla years ago, she was a relatively unknown character save for some Old School gamers like me. Now, she is moving up in the world.

I like the red spine. Help differentiate them from my 5.0 books.

Skylla is looking good. I am hoping we will be getting some more of her.  Greyhawk will be the core setting so I am expecting more Tasha/Iggwilv material too.

I'll keep you posted on this new 5R version of D&D.

Character Creation Challenge: Skylla for Wasted Lands

Continuing some magic characters, I also want to do one that I have meant to do since Wasted Lands came out.

Skylla is a character I have talked about a lot here. She is one of the old LJN Dungeons & Dragons figures (who never got a proper figure), was an NPC in the Shady Dragon Inn, and was to appear in the D&D Cartoon. I was talking about her for years before she came back into popularity. Not only have stated her up for various D&D-like/OSR RPGs, I also have her in an "evil run" in Baldur's Gate 3.

While she is a D&D-owned character, I have done quite a lot with her here, and a comparison should be made.

Skylla character sheets

Since I am using Skylla and Kelek together in both Baldur's Gate 3 and my War of the Witch Queens (and Witchlight), I am going to do them both here. Both are magic user, but I also want to highlight their differences.

First up. Skylla.

Skylla is often depicted as a 6th-level Magic-user; this makes her level title "Warlock," which is often how she is described. I my posts on her I have used a variety of classes, but most often a witch. For the purposes of this post I am going to keep her at 6th level.  In the D&D 5e version of her she has Warlock as her class and this is what I went with in Baldur's Gate 3.

Wasted Lands only has a Sorcerer class. So I'll need to make some tweaks to her and Kelek (who will also be a Sorcerer) to make them feel different.

Wasted Lands as D&D

Early on in the Framingham, MA test trials of the anti-Breast cancer drug Tamoxifen it became so obvious that the drug was effective given the obvious differences in the two sets of participants (experimental vs. control) that even though it was a double blind study everyone knew the the drug was working, and working well. They stopped the study and put all the participants on Tamoxifen.

That is where I am at now in this experiment.

I am going to say I can emulate any sort of D&D-like experience with Wasted Lands.

Tomorrow, with Kelek, I'll focus less on this obvious point and more on how to emulate different sorts of spellcasters.

You can get the Wasted Lands RPG and the NIGHT SHIFT RPG at Elf Lair Games.

Mail Call: Dungeons & Dragons The Lost Wave Figures (2022 SDCC Exclusives)

Nice little treat in the mail today.  A while back I had arranged to get some of the new "Lost Wave" Dungeons & Dragons figures produced by NECA and sold exclusively at the 2022 SDCC.  The set included a full version of Skylla and a "new" version of Kelek.  So you know I could not say no.

Well, today they came!

No real desire to keep Pulvereye or Valkeer, but I'll put them in with the other D&D toys for my kids to sell to pay for my medical bills in 30 years.

I am pleased with the Skylla and Kelek figures.

Kelek also looks good. Wish I had kept my original one from the 80s.

Right now my youngest is 3D printing my Kelek on Warg. But it was not ready at the time of this posting so maybe next time.

Skylla: Pathfinder 2nd Edition

I thought it might be nice to break up the reviews here and see if I can build one of my favorite characters for Pathfinder Second Edition.  And that means I am building a witch.

My girl Skylla here has gotten a lot more popular since I started this series almost 10 years ago. Since then she has gotten new official D&D 5 stats, a mini, and a new action figure release. All of that in the last year alone.  I'd love to take credit for it, but it is really just part of the same thing I was doing 10 years ago; discovering a cool, but under-used character.

A foot in two worlds

What is great about this is I can compare and contrast the official D&D5 Warlock Skylla to a possible Pathfinder 2e Skylla.  I can also compare and contrast her with the Pathfinder 1st edition witch I did years ago.

In this case, I cleaved a little closer to her Base stats found in module XL1 Quest for the Heartstone and her warlock stats found in The Wild Beyond The Witchlight.

For this build I kept her at 6th level to correspond base stats and the D&D5 stats and not the 7th level I have typically been using.  I have not seen a lot of Pathfinder 2e statblocks online, so I am going with my own format here.

I like this. She compares well to her D&D5 counterpart. Lots of spells all over the place and LOTS of feats, but that's Pathfinder Second Edition.

Skylla vs. Skylla

In both cases her Patron is Baba Yaga. So that's really nice. I thought about taking a magical tatoo to cover her mark from Baba Yaga, but I am still reading through the Secrets of Magic book so I am not sure that works just yet.

I feel she might have more magical might than her D&D5 counterpart. I thought this would happen which is why I wanted to set her at the same level (6th level) for a better comparison.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Yesterday was my Birthday!

My oldest spent his day off smoking ribs and brisket for me.

Smoked Meats!Smoked Meats and a potato

My youngest made me a strawberry pie with strawberries picked from my wife's garden.

I also picked up some D&D-related gifts for myself. A Hellfire Club t-shirt (from Stranger Things).

And a 6" custom Skylla figure.  She looks pretty good with the rest of my Skylla figures and minis.

Skyllas

I got some other stuff too. A new hard drive for my computer project. A new Dremel for various projects around the house.

Speaking of computer projects, my new one is taking a bit longer, but I am getting there. Had to remove the old CRT faceplate so I can replace it with an LCD.

TRS-80 Computer rebuild

Still debating which OS to go with on this one.  I kinda want to go with Ubuntu Linux.  My CoCo uses Debian Linux, but I am betting I'll have the processing power to go with Windows.  Either way, I really want a program language IDE on it. Maybe Python.

So Happy Birthday to me!

New D&D Minis and Figures

So the universe has decided I need to spend more money on little plastic people.

Up first, and very near and dear to my heart are new NECA, LJN-style D&D action figures.

NECA SDCC exclusive figures

They look great, but I am mostly interested in the Skylla and Kelek figures.  I am quite excited for the Skylla one since she never had a 4" figure release.

Kelek figure

Skylla figure

I had a Kelek back in the day, this one looks a lot like that older one save that this newer Kelek looks like he has a mohawk.

So a while back I picked up the Kelek and Skylla D&D Miniatures from WizKids, well their next round is coming out and I am very excited about this one too. And it should be a lot cheaper.

It looks like there will be five characters. Diana, Hank, Eric, Presto, and an unnamed cleric.

Here is our unnamed cleric.

Aleena

Given the tabard, the mace, and the design I am making the guess that this is Aleena.

Missing are Shelia and Bobby, which kinda sucks really, but not a problem. Thanks to HeroForge.

Of course, WizKids might have another wave.

My HeroForge Skylla and Kelek compare well to the new WizKids versions.

In any case, these are likely to suck up a lot of my gaming budget.
