I consider myself fairly knowledgeble and yet something still pops up that I either didn't know about or leaves me scratching my head.

Hmmm... There are people who spend hours upon hours working on costumes to celebrate their favorite characters and come up with interesting interpretations of them. That sounds like a major geek to me.
What's more, he doesn't call out the guys who learn to vacuform plastic in order to make their Master Chief armor. He just has an issue with women who show a little skin.
I think somebody has issues.
As for me, I want to thank the cosplayers of all genders, body types, genres. They certainly make our geek gatherings more wonderful.
