The New Ghostbusters

The new Ghostbusters trailer is out if you have not seen it.

I LOVED the first Ghostbusters.  I got a Ph.D. in Psychology because I wanted to be just like Peter Venkman. (well....sorta).  It is one of the few movies I consider to be "perfect". It hits every beat and there is not a wasted moment on screen.

I think this new movie looks great.

Here. Let me say that again. I think this new movie looks great.

I said as much on the Youtube site and I have been bombarded with so much ire that I can't quite get what the hell these people are thinking.  I have been accused of being a.) a bot. b.) a Sony employee. c.) a Sony bot.  d.) a woman e.) a lesbian but mostly f.) an idiot.  In fact the comments got so bad that someone (either YouTube or Sony) deleted them all.  I still have the emails though.

I have read some of the comments on this too and frankly, I am dumbfounded.

I am no fan of random off the cuff remakes...but this is that. This feels more like a sequel or reboot.
Plus it is also an idea I have been hearing about for 20+ years.  Restarting with a new generation of Ghostbusters.  It worked for Ghostbusters Extreme. Hell it worked great for the Next Generation. Seriously, what the hell is the problem here?
(Reads more comments).  Oh.  Seriously? People are bitching about an all female cast?
Seriously??
I really only have one thing to say about that.

Grow the fuck up people!

Your whining and bitching about this "ruining your childhood" makes you sound like whiny children.
Your complaining about this being some "feminist agenda" makes you sound like a neanderthal and a stupid one at that.

I am going to watch this movie. Likely I am going to enjoy it. But whether it is good or bad ultimately will depend on the script and the actors involved. NOT in the fact that it's a remake or an all female cast.

Plus Kate McKinnon can do no wrong in my mind.  It should be good just because she is in it.

  1. I would say with Extreme and TNG that they were still connected to the orginal shows. In Extreme, the new team was mentored by Egon and the finale was a two-part team up episode with the original team.

I think the trailer looks great, I want to see it, I do wish they would have connected it to the orginal movies however.

  2. Well said, Tim. I'm really looking forward to this. Paul Feig is a great comedy director, and I'm a fan of Melissa McCarthy, so I'm planning to see this on the big screen. More Ghostbusters has to be a good thing, right?

  3. I was happy to see that this wasn't simply a remake of the original.

I was sad to see that only the white women were scientists...although that does follow the original, where only the three white guys were scientists.

  4. I'm excited for this new movie and think the premise is a great idea. However, the trailer wasn't as funny as i'd have hoped and I hope we learn the fate of the original team in the film.

I will say as the trailer went on, it got better.

  5. Let me add, even with my problems with the trailer, it "felt" like a Ghostbusters film.

  6. I thought the trailer started out strong and weakened because was just a little too long. Trailers don't really have to explain story points like "Ghosts can imitate people" watching one ghostbuster slapping the ghost out of another would have done the job fine. They also didn't' have to try to explain who the ghostbusters were, there were 2 films already, we get it these are new ghostbusters.

  7. You are absolutely right.

I can certainly see that changes made to canon is a straight sequel would undermine some nostalgia e.g. Midichlorians in Star Wars and Aliens in Highlander 2 but that is not the case here.

  8. And a somewhat different script where their only african american ghostbuster is indeed a scientist as the narration claims...rather than a contempt for ordinary workingclass stiffs who might stand up and be counted. And that thirty years ago four guys saved new york meaning the new film is same universe and not a gender reversed reboot...but you never know. It might be interesting...despite their nonstandard deviation from old ghostbusters.

  10. Wow. Weird.

    I should probably elaborate.

I have not seen the trailer (I will watch it after I finish commenting). I saw a promotional photo for the new (all female) cast of the new Ghostbusters a few months back. It made me very excited. The original Ghostbusters was a great film, in large part due to the fantastic chemistry between some of the best comedic actors of the time. Now we get a revamped GB with some of the best comedic actors of our time, along with an updated slant? How could anyone complain?

Consider what they COULD have done. GB2 was terrible. Making an old man revamp would be terrible (Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull anyone?). Or let me put it another way:

Land of the Lost was a fairly important part of my childhood. I loved it and find it inspirational to this day. The Will Ferrell film was quite funny but fairly disappointing because I wanted something with a serious tone, updating and building on my childhood memories. In a way, the film "hurt me" because it poked fun at something I took seriously as a child.

The new Ghostbusters will not disappoint my childhood, because it is obviously designed to be a comedic vehicle wrapped in a silly supernatural premise. The same as the original. That's all one could ask for, really. As I said, I've been excited about the project for months...I loved Ghostbusters!

It's weird that people would complain and bitch at all. It's especially weird the reasons they've chosen to complain and bitch. It's weird that you need to write a post like this. Really...weird. And I live in Paraguay where weird and ridiculous are pretty common day occurrences.

  11. I showed the pic To my daughter. "All the Ghostbusters are girls". "That IS cool". Enough said.

  12. Glad to hear you're liking it. I wanted to like it, but it was a slow start trailer and I didn't like the first half. Felt a bit slow and -- somewhat apologetic or defensive about the casting / reboot-not-a-reboot issue.

The latter half felt like the Ghostbusters: here's the premise (presented with a sly smile), here are the characters busy being themselves, and here are the kinds of adventures and interplay we're going to have.

The fan-edited trailer got a thumbs up from me, though. Can't wait to see more.
