Work has me busy today writing faculty training guidelines. But that doesn't mean I am not active on my projects.
I have a question for you all today.
What is your favorite 70's science fiction or science fantasy movie (or TV show)?
I am looking for obscure stuff here and the weirder the better.
Now by 70s I do mean 1970 to 1979. BUT I will take movies as early as 1967 or late as 1983.
A few of mine are:
2001 A Space Odyssey (1968)
Star Wars (1977)
Alien (1979)
Logan's Run (1976)
Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) (computers were the new demons!)
I also want to extend my personal thanks and a shout out to the Space: 1970 blog.
Christopher Miller really has a great blog and I have spent hours reading it over.
Let me know what you like and why.
Soylent Green, Silent Running, Colossus, the Planet of the Apes films, Westworld, Logan's Run, Rollerball, the Andromeda Strain, Zardoz, Time After Time, Wizards.
ReplyDeleteWithout Dark Star in 1974 there wouldn't have been an Alien so it surely has to be in there. It's available on Amazon Prime here in the UK, don't know about where you are....
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for Silent Running (1972) - got to love Huey, Dewy and Louie the droids.
Space 1999 (1975-1977) was Gerry Anderson's answer to Star Trek. And personally I reckon was also the forerunner for the uniforms in Star Trek The Motion Picture and TNG.
For a more psychedelic feel, then I also heartily "recommend" Robert Fuerst's adaptation of Michael Moorcock's The Final Programme....
There's a movie that I saw as a kid, like a space horror film either Italian or Spanish and all I remember of it was the credits that showed each character in a scene as normal and then the last few seconds of their death scene. does anyone know this film? it had some hotties in it IIRC...
ReplyDeleteMovie wise Star Wars obviously. Also Disney's The Black Hole. TV shows, Iloved Buck Rogers and Battle Star Galactic, as well as Jason of Star Command.
ReplyDeletelittlemute.
ReplyDeleteI think I know which one you are talking about, but I can't recall the name either. It may have been featured on MST3k as well.
if you remember, make a post about it. it's not green slime is all I know. A Bava film? I'm clueless
DeleteWait, do you want my favorites, or do you want obscure stuff I liked?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite movie/franchise was Planet of the Apes (1968), which I didn't see in the theaters, but when it had its network TV debut in the '70s, along with the other Apes movies and the TV series. I wrote to the network when it was cancelled. Roddy McDowell became one of my favorite actors for a good while. My favorite TV series was, of course, Star Trek. Never really cared much for Star Wars, and probably that's because I already had those two as favorites.
Obscure favorite: Quark, which ran on NBC in 1977. It's about a space garbage man.
Other obscurities: although Logan's Run had a so-so TV series, the series I liked more was Fantastic Journey (1977), about people stranded in the Bermuda Triangle, where different time zones co-exist. Roddy McDowell was part of the cast.
Someone mentioned Jason of Star Command, which basically re-used sets and props from another children's show, Space Academy. Neither was all that great, but I liked Space Academy better because it had Jonathan Harris. Also, a robot. But it also reminded me of another Filmation live-action kids' show from the era, Ark II, which was sort of a toned-down Damnation Alley.
For TV shows, the Six Million Dollar Man/Bionic Woman, Battlestar Galactica, UFO, Land of the Lost, The Starlost (!!!), Buck Rogers, Space: 1999, Ark II, Kolchak the Night Stalker, the Man From Atlantis (with Victor Buono as the recurring villain), Star Blazers, Salvage I, and Logan's Run (which was awful, but I was eleven and loved it).
ReplyDeleteI remember Quark! That's the first mention of it I've seen in decades!
ReplyDeleteAlien, that film was brutal. It scared me so bad as a kid.
ReplyDeleteWestworld, was weird, I remember thinking it was super cool, and Logan's Run of course. All the Planets of the Apes movies, to awesome...I remember it being really weird to me, fascinating. And Rollerball...mad max on skates....
Phase IV is one of the least-discussed SF movies from that time, and it's a doozy -- I think it's currently streaming on Netflix, and it's well worth your time. Slow-paced, but smart and stylish.
ReplyDeleteStar Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Land of the Lost (if that counts), Six Million Dollar Man, Project UFO, Far Out Space Nuts, Ark II. I loved those shows then but only Star Wars really stands the test of time for me.
ReplyDeleteYeah. This is all great stuff.
ReplyDeleteGoing to go on a 70s Sci-fi bender here in a bit.
StarCrash!
ReplyDeletealso Horror Express is a great Syfy / horror movie from the decade. Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.
