The new Call of Cthulhu is now up on Kickstarter.

First off the $40,000 goal seems lofty for any game book, but it is likely that CoC can pull it off.
Afterall, funding just started and it is already at $10k.
No. The odd thing to me seems to be the changes in the rules.
Call of Cthulhu is one of the steadfast games in my collection. Book from my 2nd ed work with my 5th ed, 5.6th and 6th editions.
A change like this could introduce some new sort of horror to the CoC fans, the Edition Wars.
So I am not 100% certain on this one yet. I am certain it will be fantastic and quality work.
I'll be keeping an eye this one.
I heard a podcast interview with the designers of the new edition on Yog-Sothoth a while back. While some of the changes sound interesting, I'm of the opinion that people who wanted changes already got them...it's called Trail of Cthulhu, or one of the other CoC variants for other systems. A change in the core of CoC itself seems....well.....I like what they're suggesting, but don't think it's at all necessary. We'll see.
ReplyDeleteThere's a fresh interview with the authors on the Miskatonic University podcast. It sounds like a lot of the more radical design revisions have been relegated to optional rules and appendices, which is nice. I was nervous there for a bit, but I'm hopeful that we'll get a 7th edition that won't spark any wars.
ReplyDeleteDo you think you'll back the Kickstarter, Tim? I'm undecided as yet...

ReplyDeleteI am not. Not that I don't like CoC, I love it. But to me this is not what a Kickstarter should be about.
ReplyDeleteCoC7 is going to get funded. No questions. I like to fund Kickstarters though that look like they NEED my help. The ones that won't see the light of day without my input. Makes me feel like I am accomplishing something really.
Just went to see what the changes will be-already funded.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely hear what you're saying there, Tim.
ReplyDeleteI guess for me the argument in favor of funding the KS as opposed to waiting to buy the product off the shelves is that, apparently, some the stretch goals will consist of opening up for contributor input on things like graphic design and layout. After the execrable 6th edition layout, I'm all for having a say in avoiding a repeat of that fiasco!
I bought the first hardcover version that was released.... that was back in the late 80's....
ReplyDeleteNot really familiar with the later editions of the game... And the "freshly returned" Ghoul ... Mr. Douglas Trumble ( From one of the short games in that first version) is still a character in our current game as well...
