Boy did I stick it to them when I gave them my hard earned shackles for a setting I've never run with a ruleset (ADnD 1E) I've never played. Oh, and I bought the DnD 3E version of OA and I've barely used it. But I showed them. LOL

I try to be honest with myself and other when I make mistakes. What was trying to prove? The times HAVE changed, do you know how I know? Because a film like Brewster's Millions has a whole scene to explain how a Black man is rich.Or when a line about raping a girl is just a throwaway in my beloved Sixteen Candles. Things have changed and most of it is for the better, but media knows how to Tork us up because that has been their job for decades. Millions of new players have come to DnD which is now kind of cool and they look at this stuff and go, "hang on a minute".

I love Robert Scwhalb's Shadow of the Demon Lord and several years before the term "race" gained attention he used the term "ancestries" and I never even noticed but as soon as ENWorld did a story about the change for PF2 I was ready to be a keyboard warrior. Why?

Here is how I try to frame things now, if a member of my group or a customer playing in my store came to me and said, "This thing hurts me" I'd try to make things right and not be a dick. Why not realize that these things might actually hurt someone? Racism causes all kinds of medical issues bothy physical and psychological, lets remember that and strive to be better.Cross Planeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00258583245202567276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7913319789564397699.post-87441845041873795512021-12-09T21:19:40.854-06:002021-12-09T21:19:40.854-06:00The buzz around disclaimers accelerated its sales,...The buzz around disclaimers accelerated its sales, granted - but as you said, it would likely have reached mithril purely on its own merits eventually. You didn't specify how *fast* it had to get there, after all. :)

But of course I'm biased, it's one of my personal favorites from AD&D and I'm willing to accept its more problematic elements as a product of the times more easily than some folks - without being blind to the fact that it *is* problematic in quite a few ways.Dick McGeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14521293874696659063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7913319789564397699.post-78847317400065210102021-12-09T16:55:09.461-06:002021-12-09T16:55:09.461-06:00I don't know. It shot to Silver fast and then to Gold, but that caused it to hang for a long period of time. Would it have gotten there? Sure, I'll agree that it would have, but nowhere near this fast. Timothy S. Nostalgia is a strong seller to begin with, even the faux nostalgia of folks too young to recall AD&D from their childhood. It was one of the best hardbacks in the range on content alone, with interesting classes, character species, a surprisingly decent martial arts system for its day, and a fairly decent array of new spells, critters, and magic items. Also has kind of a striking cover, which is how many folks judge a book no matter how the saying goes.

It's also full of uncomfortable stereotypes and shallow takes on various cultures, especially by modern standards, and the disclaimers don't change that any. They might make a few people feel better about buying it anyway, but I'd bet that far less of a factor than the publicity driven by loons insisting the disclaimers be removed. Curiosity about "just how bad is this and why are people taking about it so much?" is as good a sales driver as nostalgia and content.

Dick McGeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14521293874696659063noreply@blogger.com
